Opening night of Emily Wakeling's new art exhibition "The Small & Meeek" will feature sets by Marlinchen and local klezmer band Obligé. Musically and visually, a celebration of the secret world of girls. Starts early, 6pm, at Hands On Art, The Boardwalk (near the Boardwalk restaurants), South Bank Parklands. Friday September 1st. Juggler's Art Space

Come and squeeze yourself into Juggler's Art Space on August 16th to see Marlinchen play alongside Look!pond, Mt Augustus, Smile and Dick Desert. We will have the pleasure of having an accompanying interactive video work, "Hand Held", by Tim Plaisted, in what will hopefully be the first of many visual collaborations. Marlinchen are very excited to bring together their friends Lawrence English and The Rational Academy for a night I shall call "Sempu". Neither lucky nor totally unlucky, days with a sempu blessing are for carrying out tasks at a slow and careful pace. Bands will merge, sounds will overlap and new joys are to be had by all.

MARLINCHEN

Marlinchen are that special something that makes you thank God such a thing as music exists; evoking everything from the mythical worlds of fairy tales and children’s rhymes to the more adult Tubular Bells and artists such as Faith & Disease and Lisa Gerrard.

Named after a character from the Brothers Grimm tale The Juniper Tree, guitarist Maxwell Blair says the Brisbane quintet strive to recapture that childhood innocence. “Marlinchen, or ‘Little Marlene’, is a German term of endearment,” he says. “Childlike virtue, wisdom and wonder inspire me.”

Evoking more atmosphere than many composers do with large budgets, their demo Drawing A Cat With the Aid of Two Coins will certainly conjure up childhood images you thought you’d forgotten: real or imagined. So how does one go about creating such an impression?

“The music writing process will start with Max’s or my chords,” keys player Brett Hansen says. “I like to think of a mood, and then the creation just flows. After we have run through a new song, we often discuss what it evokes for each of us. All sorts of films come to mind.”

Since the group’s inception, the line-up has expanded gradually to that which you see today.

“Each addition to the band has taken the music in a slightly different, but advanced, direction. It was certainly not imagined this way when Max and I first started making music but it pleases me,” bassist Glen Miller says.

“Everyone is open enough to let it change, which is important,” vocalist Jasmine Hulme adds.

So what can you expect from their live show?

“Shivers-inducing violin; Skye [McNicol] is such an amazing performer,” Blair says. “And the cinematic implications of our music allow listeners to wander throughout their imaginations; our music invites people to visualise a scene from a film, whether imagined or real.”

Marlinchen turn Ric’s into an enchanted forest (or whatever you imagine) Wednesday Mar 15.

I'm always impressed by the friendly atmosphere in Ric's and last night was even more so. It was a pleasure to see Marlinchen open for The Golden Circles. It was not the most direct pairing of bands, as Marlinchen chose some of their more sombre material, and The Golden Circles' nod to Belle and Sebastian was much more upbeat, but it's nice to have variety in one's evening.

Marlinchen are very excited to have Brisbane's atmospheric pop darlings The Golden Circles play with us on April 4th at Ric's. I've adored what I have heard from them so far and look forward to seeing them live. The Golden Circles' website can be found at www.thegoldencircles.com
Again, this will be a free event, starting 9pm. We'll have some more demos to give away on the night (if you say nice things to us).

Maxwell, Glen, Skye, Brett and I headed along to see Bloon play last night at The Troubadour on Brett's recommendation and we were all swept away by their grand sounds. I particularly admired the way they could go from sweet glockenspiel moments to heavy guitar sounds. Their tiny little flyers were great as well.

Marlinchen will be playing once more at Ric's on the 4th of April in what has become quite a succession of shows. The first one was in early January, where we were delighted to have the noise-pop dreamers The Rational Academy headline for us. In a matter of a few days we were then asked to do the support for Ambitious Lovers. Not hearing their music before, it was great to stay for their ukelayle and DIY percussion, and, coincidentally, their cover of a Rational Academy song. And our last performance (as mentioned in posts below) was our first time in the later slot.

We're not sure who we'll be playing with yet as it's all been late notice, but I'll keep everyone posted as soon as possible.
